Podcasting

I tried two different methods of getting podcasts. First, I tried getting podcasts using iTunes. I didn’t realize that this feature was available as I am fairly new to iTunes so it is good to know about. I also tried adding some Nature Publishing podcasts to my Bloglines account. I was able to get podcasts from both sources. If I used an iPod I think that using iTunes to download the podcasts to my iPod would be the best way as then I might listen to the podcasts with my iPod.

I personally prefer seeing videos versus listening to the audio only podcasts so I don’t know if I would make that much use of audio only podcasts. While all of these Library 2.0 features are very interesting there aren’t enough hours in the day to read all of the blog feeds, listen to podcasts, add tweets to twitter and update blog entries.

Twitter could be useful for short announcements about the libraries provided we have users who are twittering. The question I have is who is twittering? One presentation I went to at ACRL surveyed students and they weren’t using Twitter.

Shelfari

I set up an account on Shelfari for the 2nd assignment of the Online Application and Tools module. You can easily search to find books to add to your bookshelf. I like the fact that you can keep track of books that you have read and also add books that you would like to read. I often forget the names of the books and authors that I have read.

The only problem I am having with these different Library 2.0 applications is keeping track of all my accounts and passwords!

Google Docs

Google Docs could be quite useful for group projects. It seemed quite easy to use but I only explored the spreadsheet application. I think that the Google Docs spreadsheet might be useful for some basic applications but eventually you might need to export it to Excel to take advantage of some of Excel’s more advanced features.

Adding information to a wiki

I just added information to a wiki page for the Library 2.0 course. It was very easy. It might be useful to use a wiki for a group report. However, you might have to set some ground rules for editing just in case not everyone agreed with your changes. I guess you could always revert to an earlier version if needed though. I have seen some libraries that have created a wiki for information sources with a restriction on who could add content.
